How to Find the Best Keywords with the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool
You should know all the keywords/phrases related to your online business. What search terms do people use to find a website that sells the product or service you sell or want to sell? This is what you should know. It will have two main usages for you: in pay per click advertising and in search engine optimization of your website and web pages.
But it has another advantage too. What if you could find out that how many times these keywords are used by searchers in search engines? It will be a big help to know how competitive these keywords are and if the related product or service is in a high demand or not. On the other word, it helps you to know if it does worth to spend time to create, optimize and promote a website for such a product or not?Google labs has a good service named Google Suggest. Google Suggest can be used by searchers to find better and more focused key phrases related to what they look for. But I think Google Suggest works more for the internet marketers specially when they want to promote a product, design a new website and weblog and know about the rate of the demand that a product or service has.
Internet marketers can use the Google Suggest to assess their competitors and estimate the amount of the time and money they have to spend to promote a product or website.
Use the Google Search and see how it works. Lets try it with each other. Please open the Google Suggest in a new internet explorer window and start typing in its search box. Please enter “search” but without quotes.
As you see, as soon as you start typing, Google starts giving suggestions even when you have not entered a word completely. When you become closer to the end of the word “search” - for example when you have entered “sear”, you can see the complete word in the suggestion list:

As you see, “search”, as an individual keyword, is used 8,960,000,000 times whereas “search engines” is used 3,290,000,000 by the searchers. By comparing these two keywords, you can easily find out that “search” is a competitive and high demanding keyword and it will not be easy to receive traffic through it because there are thousands of good and quality websites that are focused on this word. It is the same with the “search engines”.
Compare these two high demanding keywords with another keyword like “water filtration” that has been used for 27,000,000 times. So if you design a website or try to sell “water filtration” products, you will have less competitors and also less customers.
This is very important to prepare a list of the keywords related to the product or website you want to launch, compare them with each other and also check the competitor websites for each of them. Google Suggest is one of the best and most accurate tools you can use.
If you enter a keyword completely and then hit the space, Google displays the list of the key phrases that have the keyword at the beginning. This is the result I received after I typed “search engine”:

Try to know and collect all the related keywords/phrases and then decide if it does worth to spend time and money on them or not. It does not when they are too competitive or when they have no reasonable demand.

Thank you for nice article. ITs really cool website
“…As you see, “search”, as an individual keyword, is used 8,960,000,000 times whereas “search engines” is used 3,290,000,000 by the searchers….”
I have to correct you on a point. Google Suggest does not give the volume of searches as you have inferred. It only tells you the number of result pages. Google never shares exact numbers of the searches for a particular keyword. But one can use Google Trends, Adwords Traffic Estimator to roughly estimate the number of searches/day. But that does not dismiss Google Suggest’s usage. It is helpful in, as you noted, finding alternate keywords/phrases.
Btw, You have a rocking site. :)…
Hi Arun,
Thanks for your comment.
I really thought that the Google Suggest works as the Overture Keyword Suggestion tool and it shows the number of searches. I heard this from a very famous SEO that has been working on this business for so many years.
But when I checked, I found out that “you are right” and this is the number of indexed pages that the Google Suggest shows not the number of searches. Thanks a lot.
Best regards,
Vahid

Yes yes yes, we need a tool that tells us what our rank is in Google search?
Thanks
Do you guys know how to capture the google suggestions with from some language like php?
Norman,
I am not sure if you can have the Google Keyword Suggestions in your websites. You can have other Google products like the Google May but you have to have the Google API code first otherwise it will be illegal.
