Yahoo Directory - Deal or No Deal?
Yahoo directory is one of the two recommended directories by Google. The other one is DMOZ that has been used to be so important for Google.
It is still important but as Google has had a lot of changes in the past two years and many other important factors are added to its algorithm, DMOZ doesn’t have the importance it was used to have but it is still important.
DMOZ is free and you should submit your websites to it and if they become listed, it will add a lot of value to your website and will be effective in its ranking. I will talk about DMOZ and how you can have your websites listed in it in other articles.
Yahoo Directory is not free and you have to pay $299 to have your website reviewed by the editors. This fee doesn’t guarantee your website listing in Yahoo Directory. It just guarantees that your website will be reviewed by the editors within one week and if approved, it will be listed for one year.
As I said Yahoo directory is recommended by Google because Google knows that websites are reviewed by human editors before they become listed in Yahoo. So having a link from Yahoo directory can be effective in your website link popularity and ranking in Google if it doesn’t have any problems that preclude it from being ranked by Google.
It was used to be effective in ranking in Yahoo search in the past when Yahoo used the Google search. At that time, Yahoo extracted the links from its directory, mixed them with Google search result and displayed them on its search result page but it seems having links from Yahoo directory doesn’t have any effect in the ranking in Yahoo search or if it has any effect, it is not significant.
If you can afford to pay the $299, then it is highly recommended to submit your website to Yahoo Directory. I believe the traffic and also the strong backlink it will make for your website will return the $299 in a short time.
What kind of websites will be approved by Yahoo editors?
Your website have to be a well-designed and professional website with good and on topic content. Websites that can not be placed in any special category, have a small chance for being approved by Yahoo editors. There are a lot of weblogs that are like that. They talk about everything and it is not clear that in what category they can be placed.
Unlike DMOZ, affiliate websites can be approved for being listed in Yahoo directory but they have to meet the above criteria.

A good news!
Some of my websites were submitted to Yahoo Directory about three years ago and I had not renewed their listing and thought that they are removed after one year but when I checked I found out that they still can be found in Yahoo Directory.
When I searched a little more and asked other webmasters, I found out that if you have a good site that Yahoo likes, it looks like they won’t delete your site from their Directory even if you don’t renew and pay again.
So just sign up for one year and then wait and see what happens before you pay the $299 again. If they remove your websites, then you will need to sign up again if you like and if they don’t, you will save $299 every year.

yahoo is a deal, but so are business.com, aviva directory and alive directory, which are cheaper
No deal in my book. $299 is way to expensive for a simple directory link, even if it’s from the mighty Yahoo!.
Deal, depending on your business, many thanks for this post.
